Alpin is a type family, whose inspiration comes from mechanical engraving on metal plates.
«Do not lean out» is engraved under the window of the Mürren–Grütschalp train. The inscription was the starting point for the font Alpin. The tool that was used to drill the letters in the metal plate altered the original monolinear font; re-sulting in a rounded nib with drop ending and cuts that recall inktraps. Alpin is inspired by the shapes generated by mechanical engraving devices. The typeface features considerable cuts, that cut away from the bowl instead of cutting away from the stem, creating white space. They become more impor-tant in heavier weights inducing unconvention-al counters, that remind of the flatpack plastic models we assembled as kids. The family has two extreme weights: Alpin Regular and Alpin Black.
